The Dusty Shed is 10!
We celebrate 10 years of bringing people together, tackling loneliness and isolation
The Dusty Shed is celebrating its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of supporting people in Ely and Caerau to build friendships, share skills, and find a sense of purpose.
Set up to tackle loneliness and social isolation, the Shed offers a welcoming, supportive space where people can take part in woodworking and craft projects, learn practical skills, volunteer, or simply enjoy a cuppa and a chat. The Dusty Shed is especially for older men and women, and is open to anyone who wants connection, routine, and community.
The Dusty Shed responds to a growing challenge. Many older people experience changes that can shrink their social world, including retirement, reduced mobility, bereavement, and loss of confidence. For some people, this is made harder by social norms that discourage asking for support. The Shed provides a non-clinical, informal environment where people can feel comfortable turning up, being themselves, and getting involved.
Alongside the workshop space, the Shed now includes a covered area for relaxing and social time, including darts and board games. Members can also share skills in areas such as woodwork, metalwork, electronics, model-making, and repair.
The Dusty Shed Wellbeing Group was established to support older men experiencing loneliness, social isolation, and declining emotional wellbeing. Developed in response to the needs of members who were benefiting more from conversation and one-to-one social interaction, the group provides a dedicated, physically and emotionally safe space where people can talk, connect, and support one another. Sessions focus on the issues men may face in later life, including retirement, loss of identity, caring responsibilities, bereavement, and declining physical or mental health. The group helps participants reduce isolation, build trusted relationships, share coping strategies, and improve overall wellbeing through regular social contact and mutual support.
Pop in for a cuppa and a chat
The Dusty Shed is welcoming new members, with a special invitation to older people who may be feeling isolated, stuck at home, recently retired, bereaved, or simply missing regular company. No experience is needed, and there is no pressure to “be practical”. If you would like friendly faces, a warm welcome, and a reason to get out, you will fit right in.
