Bob’s Story: How the Dusty Shed Helped Me Rebuild

With support from fellow Shed member Ian, Bob has been busy creating a flower hanger for his home. “What this place has done for me has been amazing,” Bob says. “Coming here has given me structure and routine. The camaraderie with the other men is brilliant — it feels like going to work again.”

Bob spent his career as a bricklayer – “a jack of all trades, and master of none!”. He worked on building sites across the UK. After retiring, he experienced the loss of several close family members, which led to a deepening depression. Eventually, Bob faced a mental health crisis and received support from the team at Llandough Hospital. It was their community outreach service that suggested he visit a Men’s Shed — and that’s how Bob found his way to the Dusty Shed.

Since joining six months ago, Bob has become an active and valued member. Alongside his woodworking projects, he’s also joined the Wellbeing Group, which meets every Wednesday for open conversation and support. “The guys are fantastic. We talk about all sorts of things – current events, personal stuff – and it’s just been great to have people to talk to.”

“Coming to the Dusty Shed has given me the space to start feeling better. I love being a member!”
